Book cover basics

How to make your own book covers - whether working with a book cover designer, or making your own.

Book covers are a vital part of your marketing

You put a lot of work into writing your book, now lets get you a book cover that will sell it.

Your book cover is the first thing your potential readers see. So it needs to tell them a lot of information about your book in just a few seconds.

Let's talk book covers

If you're with a traditional publisher, you'll probably be sent the cover for approval. What if you hate it?

If you're indie published, you're in charge of providing your own book cover. Should you find a book cover designer? Or buy premade? Or try and make your own?

The good news is that there are a whole load of options between the amateurish home made cover and the polished professionally designed one. This course covers a lot of the options (and gives you links where relevant).

Course curriculum

Your book cover is the most important thing that markets your book, but sometimes we authors are too close to our own work to view the cover objectively. This mini-course covers working with book cover designers in both traditional and indie publishing routes. There is also a section on making your own book covers using Canva.

  • The real job of your book cover (it might surprise you)
  • How to find comparator authors and comp covers
  • What to expect from cover design in traditional publishing
  • Working with a cover designer when you’re an indie publisher
  • Researching book cover tropes and genre expectations
  • What to do if you hate the cover you’ve been sent
  • How to design your own book cover (if you’re feeling brave)

This is a self-paced course. The videos are short (usually around 10 minutes long), so you can do one a week, complete the tasks and complete the course within a month.

The mini course contains teaching videos, downloadable PDF notes and templates.
